I fell in love with trains as a kid and the Colorado Train Store is filled with some great train gifts. From the Lionel train collections under the Christmas tree to the Colorado Scenic Train Rides every year, trains have always been a favorite for me.

Here is a hand picked selection of train memorabilia and more that makes for great gift giving to that special Railway buff you love.

Gift Giving Idea: Train Books

With the 1880s came the boom in Colorado railroads, investors poured money into the latest railroad technologies. Today, Colorado is a mecca for the restoration and operation of historic railroads, attracting approximately 700,000 visitors and enthusiasts each year.

Railroads of Colorado explores the fascination these improbable railways inspire and transports readers back a century, providing the history of these unique railroads, the engineering that paved their way into the mountains, and the men who built and ran them.

This 176 page books contains more than 200 photos portraying the breathtaking Durango Silverton Railroad as it operates in the 21st Century. Durango had became the heart of the Gold and Silver mining district. The Denver & Rio Grande eventually pushed its rails 45 miles up the Animas valley to Silverton.

Today it operates as the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, and it is no less a magnificent. The D&SNG is also a priceless and preserved example of living history. Every year, hundreds of thousands of visitors come to Durango to ride the trains - still powered by superbly maintained steam engines - and to experience the unblemished wilderness.

This 64 page book is an informative review of passenger train service to Colorado's Mile High City for the last decade. Covers services before the start of Amtrak in 1971. Synopsis histories are provided for Denver Union Station and for every passenger train from six major railroads that operated into Denver during this era.

A brief overall operational history is provided for each train, plus sample equipment. Illustrations highlight the rise and fall of some of the most famous passenger trains to operate across the western United States. Also included is a timeline showing the gradual demise of train service to Union Station.

The future holds great things for Union Station as we see it gradually being restored to it's historic excellence. Expect to soon see Union Station as the center for 21st century major transportation.
