Fun Free Things to do in Colorado

January "Free" Events and Activities

Start the year off right with these Free Fun things to do in Colorado. First we will show you some of our favorite January events all across the Centennial State. Then, we'll take you to some of the not so free Colorado events offered this month.



We hope you enjoy your winter family vacation. Be sure to come back and tell others about your Colorado favorites.

January is designated as "Learn to Ski and Ride" month in Colorado. While alot of the events involved are not free they are worth checking out. You can learn to ski or ride at extremely reduced rates. For more details visit our Not So Free January Things to do in Colorado page.




Ouray Ice Festival

When: January 6-9, 2011

The Ouray Ice Festival is a yearly event held in January. Come watch the pro's as they compete, take a stab at a climbing clinic or mingle with gear manufactures as they exhibit the latest and greatest. The Ice Festival is one of those Colorado Festivals that is an International favorite with climbers attending from all over the world.

Join the Denver Zoo on two(2) days in January for Free Admission to one of Colorado's largest zoos. Visit the Denver Zoo website for not to be missed feeding and show times.

Denver Art Museum (Free Days)

This kid friendly museum is great for all ages. Kids get a chance to be a kid at the family friendly center and art-making areas throughout the museum. If you and the kids love art, it's hard to beat Free Days at the Denver Art Museum.

Annual Great Fruit Cake Toss
401 El Monte Place (High School Track)
Manitou Springs, Colorado

When: January 8, 2011

How many uses are there for Fruitcake? Come find out at this year's Great Fruit Cake Toss. Where you given the gift of a fruitcake this year? Bring it along and join in the competitions. Lucky enough not to have received one this year. Not to worry limited fruitcakes will be available to rent for $1.00.

You can watch the action from 10:00am - 2:00pm or join in the varied competitions including Fruitcake Launch, Kids Toss Competition, Catch the Fruitcake and more. Registration begins at 9:00am and fee to compete is one non-perishable food item or canned good.

Ullr Fest

Breckenridge, Colorado

When: January 9-15, 2011

Breckenridge, Colorado hosts the annual week long festivities known as "Ullr Fest". Events are located at various locations throughout the city and not all events are free. Those that are free include the Ullympics on January 13th from 6:00pm-8:00pm at Carter Park and Ullr Parade at 4:30pm on January 14th on North Main.

Festivies that are not free but worth checking out include the following: $5 Afternoon Ice Skating Party at Stephen West Ice Arena on January 10th. Nordic Party on January 11th at the Gold Run Nordic Center. Chili Cook-Off on January 16th from 3:00pm - 7:00pm at the Riverwalk Center. Cost for the Cookoff is $20.00 at the door.

Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships
150 West Adams Avenue (Riverwalk Center)
Breckenridge, CO

When: January 17 - February 6, 2011

This Snow Sculpture Championships is an amazing free event which turns Riverwalk Center into a Snow Sculpture Gallery. This is one of my favorite fun free things to do in Colorado and begins with a week of artist competing in a art sculpting competition. Sculpting the huge blocks of snow begins on January 26th and ends on January 30th then judging begins.

Sculptures are on display until February 7th (weather permitting). The event is free and spectators are welcome during the entire event. Visit Breck's website for information on parking and more.

ESPN Winter X Games

The ESPN Winter X Games is a world popular extreme action sporting event not to be missed! The event is telecast live on ESPN and ABC. Expect Snowboarding, Ski and Snowmobile events with some of the biggest name competitors in Winter Sports.
