Winter Durango Train Ride to Cascade

December 29, 2008

The Durango train ride to cascade was absolutely wonderful. You can see so much of Colorado that you just can't see any other way. This is a great family adventure that has been ranked time and time again as one of the top family attractions in Colorado.

Fine Farwell

We left the city aboard the Durango Silverton Railroad as scheduled. We had a wonderful farwell with people standing on the streets and at railroad crossings, waving as we passed.

Secluded Mountain Scenery

Sheer cliffs come within feet of the train. Canyons, rushing rivers, mountain peaks and secluded communities are just a few of the amazing sights.

The Durango train ride to Cascade was about 2 hours of just awe inspiring views. We got some great shots of the train as it turned around the bends.

So Much Snow / So Little Time

We were given about 30 minutes to walk around, play in the snow along the Animas River and take photos. The snowball fight was on!

All Aboard!!

After our short break, it was time to board the train again. We were headed to our final drop off location. We would meet up with Outlaw Tours to go snowmobiling instead of going back to the Depot with the rest of the passengers.

We arrived at the drop off location about 1pm

Abandoned But Not Forgotten

As we were getting off the train we were informed the Outlaw Tours van had already left. The train crew said they would call the tour company to inform them of the oversight. With that

the train left.....

It brought new meaning to the word "abandonment". We were left in a little secluded community with a population of "No One". When I say secluded, I'm not kidding!

There were about 10 houses that appeared to be summer vacation homes only accessible by the train. There were no apparent roads in or out of this place but there must have been one under all that snow. There was a man on a snowplow that we made promise he would not leave us out in the middle of nowhere.

About 20 minutes after being dropped off by the train, the Outlaw Tours van came back to pick us up. The driver appeared to be in his early 20's, jovial, upbeat and very apologetic.

It was very very hard to be too upset about being left, it was almost comical at that point.

We finally arrived at our destination to go snowmobiling.

Durango Colorado
If you plan to ride the train we suggest a stay over in Durango. The train ride is an all day adventure and you'll likely be ready to call it an early evening upon your return. Heck, why not stay the entire week. There's alot more activities going on here that your sure to enjoy.

Silverton Colorado
My absolute favorite city in the entire world! If your planning a stay in the Durango area, be sure to include the small Victorian town of Silverton on your itinerary. It's well worth the hour drive.
