Downtown Durango
December 28, 2008
Planning to ride the Durango Silverton Railroad on Monday, we decided to stop in town to get our bearings and locate the depot.
After driving in circles around the downtown area looking for the Depot, we chose to first stop by the local Supermarket for essentials. Leaving the store, I felt the urge to ask a total stranger for help in finding the train station. The friendly resident was extremely helpful in giving directions and to my surprise seemed genuinely excited about us taking the train ride. She went on about how much fun we would have and inquired about where we lived and how long we planned to stay. The lady was eager to share some other great activities that our teen daughter "Danielle" might enjoy such as - Purgatory
- Wolf Creek Ski Resort- for tons of snow!
- Shopping and Dining in the Durango Historic Downtown
- Hot Springs in Pagosa - about an hour away
Many thanks to the lady outside the supermarket for her suggestions. I wish now that I had gotten her name. When I got out to the truck, I found my husband and an elderly gentleman talking while trying to defrost out frozen windshield wipers. They were also discussing the next day's adventurous train ride. He was explaining to my husband how far up the tracks the train went during the winter months. We left the supermarket and finally found the Depot right where they guided us. I couldn't believe we missed it! If we had only driven one more block..... That night we drove around the downtown Historic District and decided we would grab a quick bite of take out on the way back to the cabin. We stopped at a little hang-out that had pizza, sandwiches, burgers and salads. The very casual atmosphere was pleasant with pool tables and TV's to watch while we waited. I opted for the Chicken Sandwich which was absolutely delicious. Jimmy and Danielle chose burgers and we all shared a Ceasar salad. All in all, it was a great evening of super friendly people and great food. The evenings drive into town was well worth it.
